When I was younger, I never liked Mumbai, the city of Dreams. I used to call it the City of Peculiar Smells, because there were these bad, unbearable smells whenever we were in Mumbai.
However in recent years, I started growing to like the city and now I know why Mumbai is the City of Dreams and why does a Mumbaikar like the city. The city manifests itself on you, and you are just left in awe, as well as in love with the city, including it’s traffic jams, the humid weather, the rains!!
Recently went on a weekend trip to the City of Dreams, and stayed in my favourite area - Colaba. Gateway and a trip to Elephanta Caves was in the itinerary, as well as covered Haji Ali, Siddhivinayak and of course Marine Drive. And if you are in Colaba, one cannot miss the Causeway market. The market is all so colourful and you can actually buy stuff at rock-bottom prices! Not keen to purchase anything, yet couldn’t resist buying a few clothes that always had an eye on for a very long time.
The one and half hour ferry ride to Elephanta Caves was truly an experience - right from waiting for over an hour to board the ferry, while getting drenched in the rain and then drying up in the hot sun (that’s Mumbai weather for you) till we docked back at Gateway - is something which I shall never forget. When the sailors say that the sea is rough, I can now understand the feeling! The waves were as high as our ferry!! Kind of scary but we managed to dock safely on land after the ride!
Not getting enough of the sea, I just had to visit Marine Drive - and it always leaves my breath away!! The sea hitting the rocks near the shore, the city skyline in the distance - it just leaves you in awe of the beautiful nature that God created for us!
